Disaster Recovery for Twinax Users
In most disaster recovery scenarios, TCP/IP is the protocol of choice for switching between machines. Most solutions that switch users from the primary iSeries system to the back-up system require that the IP address under which the iSeries appears be changed.

For example, let's assume the production iSeries has IP address 10.1.1.10 while the back-up normally uses 10.1.1.20. In the event of a disaster, the back-up AS/400 switches to 10.1.1.10. In fact, Release 5.2 of OS/400 does this automatically.

In this scenario, users on PCs using TN5250 emulation do not have to change their settings; they simply restart their sessions and sign back on.

However, Twinax users suffer a harsher plight: local Twinax users can be left without any access to the back-up iSeries, and remote Twinax users cannot be easily switched over. This can be avoided by attaching local or remote Twinax users to the IP network via an IP-based local or remote controller. Finding a vendor with this solution is easy, since there is only one pure TCP/IP controller on the market today!

The e-Twin@x Controller, developed by BOScom, can easily switch between iSeries systems because it treats Twinax users exactly like it treats the PC users, once the session is reset. The e-Twin@x Controller, as a matter of fact, does this automatically: users can sign on to the back-up AS/400 and continue to work, without any operator intervention!

Users will appreciate being brought back up and the IT department will appreciate not fielding irate phone calls at a time when they need to focus on restoring the primary system.
