Press Release: BOSaNOVA Inc. Expands Product Line with Thin Clients and Ethernet Terminal

New products complete the portfolio of solutions for connecting remote users to midrange hosts

Indianapolis, Sunday, March 9, 2003 (COMMON Spring 2003) Several new products are on display in Booth 513 here at the COMMON Expo, announces Martin Pladgeman, President of BOSaNOVA, Inc. BOSaNOVA is introducing an Ethernet terminal and two thin client models.

"As companies replace their Twinax network with an IP infrastructure, they must also connect their remote users efficiently, cost effectively and securely," Pladgeman explains, noting that there are several options for upgrading remote sites, such as:

  1. Replace Twinax equipment with PCs and LAN-based printers
  2. Keep the Twinax devices and switch them to IP with an IP-based remote controller
  3. Replace the Dumb Twinax terminals with Ethernet terminals and use a Reverse Protocol Converter for Twinax printers
  4. Replace Twinax terminals with Thin Clients
"Many iSeries users have implemented Web-based Jadvantage, BOSâNOVA TCP/IP, the e-Twin@x Controller and e-TwinPrint Reverse Protocol Converter for options 1 and 2. This announcement completes the range of choices by adding solutions for the third and fourth options," Pladgeman says.

BOSâNOVA TBT Ethernet Terminal for Replacing Dumb Terminals
The BOSâNOVA TBT is designed for those who choose to eliminate the new-technology learning curve for current users by simply replacing dumb Twinax terminals with an Ethernet terminal. The BOSâNOVA TBT supports either a 101- or 122-key keyboard. Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) and Independent Computing Architecture (ICA) client software are included for those users wanting to connect to a Windows or Citrix environment, respectively.

BOSâNOVA LTC Series for High-speed Processing and Easy Management
The BOSâNOVA LTC Series features high-speed processors, enabling excellent response time. The entry-level model BOSâNOVA LTC-300 sports an industry-standard 300 MHz CPU, while the BOSâNOVA LTC-600 practically doubles that speed to provide top performance, even when browsing the Web. This is especially important in a thin client environment where, unlike Windows environments, Web pages are not cached and need to be reloaded each time, over the LAN.

The BOSâNOVA LTC Series of thin client terminals provides a low cost, easily configurable and versatile solution for 5250 and 3270 connectivity. Whether the application is data entry, point of sale, training, ISPs, or web kiosks, these thin clients provide highly cost-effective access to Windows desktop applications residing on a Microsoft Windows NT/2000 Terminal Server or Citrix server.

Centralized configuration and user management, including security, drastically reduce cost of ownership, while the versatility of the hardware platform and customization capabilities increase user productivity. The BOSâNOVA LTC Series includes the following features:
  • Versatile Hardware Platform: A versatile combination of features provides the flexibility to support virtually any application with the BOSâNOVA LTC Series. The BOSâNOVA LTC-300 is based on the 300 MHz Geo Processor and the BOSâNOVA LTC-600 on the 533 MHz Via Processor. The BOSâNOVA LTC-300 has 64MB of RAM, while the LTC-600 has 128MB of RAM. Both models include 32 MB of Disk on Memory (DOM). The BOSâNOVA LTC-300 is equipped with support for a SVGA display (1024 x768 16-bit color), while the BOSâNOVA LTC-600 supports up to 1024 x768 24-bit color. Both models have one parallel printer port, two serial ports, two USB ports, keyboard port, mouse port, 10/100 base-T Ethernet interface, and an audio out line. Options include a full-featured 122-key keyboard designed for use with midrange applications, smart card reader for personalization of terminal applications and permissions, PCMCIA slot, and support for 802.11b and 802.11g wireless communication.

  • Versatile Software Platform: While the desktop has a Windows 2000/XP look and feel, both the BOSâNOVA LTC-300 and BOSâNOVA LTC-600 models are based on Linux. This versatile and user-friendly operating system provides additional capabilities not available with Windows-based terminals running Windows CE, including Scaleable Windows, a Java Virtual Machine, and a Netscape browser that can be used as a Domino/Notes client, X Windows connectivity to other Linux and Unix servers. The XPDF reader Plug In provides Adobe Acrobat Reader functionality. The Linux based terminal allows users seamless access to applications running on Unix based servers. The 32 MB DOM allows localized customization of the client desktop and applications.

  • Centralized User Management: As with any Windows Server product, the system administrator manages the accounts the thin client terminals use. A major benefit is that since all applications are run from the server, there is no local installation or maintenance of software applications at the client workstation. Furthermore, since all user data and files are resident on the server, central backup is possible, thereby freeing the user of this task.

  • Centralized Configuration: The BOSâNOVA LTC Series of thin client terminals is simple to configure either locally or remotely using the Remote Terminal Administrator. The administrator can configure the terminal completely from a central location, including terminal emulation settings. The user can also be locked out of any configuration changes to keep the cost of ownership down. The firmware can also be updated from the administrator terminal, if required. Shadowing of the user's desktop can be done using the Remote Terminal Administrator module. User environments can also be cloned using this tool.

  • Centralized Security: Via the Remote Terminal Administrator, the system administrator can restrict which applications the user can run on a particular terminal.

  • Windows and Citrix Connectivity: All of the BOSâNOVA terminals provide connections to Windows Terminal Servers and Citrix servers using the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) or Independent Computing Architecture (ICA) client software. RDP connects to Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition (TSE) or Windows 2000 Servers, while ICA connects to TSE or Windows 2000 servers with Citrix Metaframe extensions.

  • Wireless Communication, Smart Cards and Barcode Equipment: The BOSâNOVA LTC Series supports 802.11b and 802.11g wireless communication, smart card readers, and barcode equipment.

  • Terminal Emulation: The BOSâNOVA LTC Series includes embedded TN5250 and TN3270 based terminal emulation software for connection to IBM iSeries (AS/400) and S/390 systems, employing the best fonts in the industry.
  Pricing
Suggested list price for the BOSâNOVA TBT is $479, $569 for the BOSâNOVA LTC-300, and $619 for the BOSâNOVA LTC-600.
