Remote Access to AS400 Using TCP/IP
Many people beyond the walls of the enterprise need access to the data and applications on the iSeries:
Sales people who need inventory, pricing and delivery dates in real-time
Branch offices or stores which need constant access to applications on the iSeries
Stores or sales offices which need to process orders and report sales on regular basis
Distribution centers which must update headquarters on shipments received and sent
Suppliers who must check orders, report shipments and check payment status
Customers who want to check their orders or update their own information
…and the list goes on…

Traditionally, users at branch offices and enterprise distribution centers were connected to the headquarters iSeries via remote controller and over leased point-to-point lines. These guaranteed "always on" access at an acceptable bandwidth, albeit at a hefty cost. Meanwhile, employees, suppliers, and customers who only needed intermittent access dialed in to the iSeries using a modem.
Today, organizations have more choices for implementing their intranets and extranets (VPN) and for providing Internet access.

For their remote users who need constant access to iSeries applications, organizations can provide improved performance by implementing a pure Twinax TCP/IP controller with advanced data compression. By eliminating SNA overhead, they can replace leased lines with frame relay, earning almost immediate ROI and continued savings over the years. Once on the TCP/IP network, all users (including those on dumb terminals) have access to the Internet, to e-mail and to other resources throughout the network.

For their remote users who need intermittent access to iSeries data and applications, organizations can provide wither web browser access or secure Internet-based dial-up access via Remote Access Server (RAS).
